Have you ever wondered, when you looked at a rabbi what made them decide to become one? Have you wondered what steps they had to take to achieve this goal and what problems they encountered along their journey? Well, please join us on Tuesday, February 21st, at 7:15 pm, on Zoom, when rabbinical student, Kelly Whitehead, Congregant Emily Whitehead‘s child, discusses this.
This event will be held on Zoom — Temple members have received the login info in advance. For non-members who would like to attend, please email office@bshert.org or call the office for details.
We’re pleased to announce that this year’s deserving honorees are our Treasurers, past and present, Helene Smith and Jennifer Tattenbaum.
Helene proudly served both Progressive Temple Beth Ahavath Shalom and B’ShERT, first as Financial Secretary and then as Treasurer for a total of 20 years. Her many years of work in an accounting firm and her commitment to temple helped guide us through the challenging first few years after the consolidation. Helene still found the time to become catering chair and to make sure that all Temple events which required food were properly cared for.
Jennifer took over from Helene in 2021 and helped manage the transition to our new accounting system (ShulCloud). As Treasurer, Jennifer used her facility with, and love for, numbers to unravel glitches and put in place processes that will carry us forward for years to come. Jennifer works full-time, has a child in B’ShERT’s Religious School and celebrates her family’s simchas while continuing to make sure Temple finances are taken care of.
We continue to be blessed to be able to keep our community together and to have members who volunteer their time and talents to keep B’ShERT active and well.

Sukkot is here! Join our community in decorating our sukkah at the temple, 5 pm Sunday 10/9. (There is no religious school on Saturday this week.)
The Social Action Committee would like to remind you that our High Holiday Food Drive, benefiting our Little Pantry and Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church’s Food Pantry, continues through October 20th. Please bring healthy, nutritious, unexpired, unopened, nonperishable food to Temple. You may drop these off when you come for services. If you want to drop food off at other times, please contact Alice between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
As we look forward to Sukkot, we want to advise all of you enthusiastic sukkah decorators (and we know that you are out there!) that in addition to our own decoration here at B’ShERT, the Interfaith Coalition of Brooklyn is giving you a second opportunity for decoration—at East Midwood Jewish Center (one of our Coalition partners) this Sunday (October 9th) at 10:00 a.m. The synagogue is located at 1625 Ocean Avenue. This event will enable you to engage with a wider community. The more that we all know each other, the better.
